Rockin' the Glockenspiel
I
was a choir nerd - or a drama geek, whichever you prefer. I played soccer through Jr. High and then freshman football in High School, but I developed fractures in the growth plates of my heels and never pursued sports after that. I'd like to blame it on this 'injury' but the simple fact, most likely, is that I just stunk at sports and found greater success and fulfillment in the arts. Sometimes I still daydream that I could've been a great football player - but alas, that path has been relegated to just that - dreaming.
Because of my experiences in Drama and Choir and Speech, etc. I always get excited when my children take part in these types of activities. So, imagine my joy when my daughter, Rose, had her first ever choir concert! Of course I was there on the front row snapping away. I'm sure it must've been a site as all the moms and dads around me held up their point and shoots and consumer cams, framing the perfect shot by viewing the LCD on the back, and I held up my 5D mk ii to my eye with a big, white 70-200 attached!
Unfortunately, our girl was on the far side of the choir risers.

But to our great delight, and surprise, each class came forward to perform a couple of songs on the xylophones and glockenspiels.

[ 0 ]
On both occasions Rose chose an 'Alto Glockenspiel' near our seats. After the show I asked her if the 'Alto Glockenspiel' was her favorite. I guess I pronounced it funny (kinda like AL-toe) because she told me that "It's AHHLL-toe".

I love watching her perform. I guess I just love watching her, period. My babes is brilliant, creative, and generous. Three wonderful qualities that make her all the more beautiful to me and everyone that knows her.

Here are a few more photos that showed up when I dumped this card onto my computer. My son, Philip... We haven't cut his hair in awhile, to the great dismay of my in-laws I'm sure. :)

[ 0 ]
Sometimes he's got the cool surfer look going on and sometimes he's just a mess! I think that this day was somewhere in between...

Oh, yes, and one of me. I don't know quite what's happening with my lips in this shot... After lunch with some photographer friends, RJ Kern was trying out my camera and 50 1.2 as he's a Nikon guy and doesn't get to handle the greatness that is Canon all that often. Thanks RJ for the lovely portrait.

Once A Bride, Now A Photographer!
T
hrough the power of Facebook I was recently able to make contact again with a former Bride - Lisa Lefringhouse. I shot Lisa and Adam's wedding almost two years ago now - wow, how time flies! Their ceremony was at the Air Force Academy Chapel and their reception was at Briarhurst Manor (which still goes down as my favorite reception food of all time - Cara's Steak Diane!). My friend Julie helped coordinate the event and did a marvelous job.
Anyway, I was so surprised to learn that Lisa is now a wedding and portrait photographer - and she's GREAT! You can check out her site at JL Fotografia and she has a blog, too!
So, if any of you are getting married in the San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose area (and you don't want to fly me out there) - give Lisa a call!

Thursday's Two-Cent Reviews (Oscar Edition)

[ 0 ]
This Sunday is 'the biggest movie event of the year'. Will you watch it? Do you care?
I do care, and I will watch it - with the aid of TIVO. I care because of the history and tradition of the Oscars and their role in cinema. I don't care too much about the fashion, or the posturing - and I don't agree most of the time with the outcome of who gets the awards - but I do love the Oscars despite all of this.
So, in this Thursday's edition I'd like to predict the winners and give you my two cents on the biggest awards. And finally, I'll write down, once and for all, my favorite films of 2008.
So, here we go.
Best Foreign Film
Not too exciting for you? I really love this category as I often find some real gems here. This year I think the two front runners are 'Waltz with Bashir' and 'The Class'. Admittedly, I haven't seen either of them (but 'The Class' opens in Denver next week!) I will predict that 'Waltz with Bashir' wins it because of the subject - War. Oscar voters like to make their political statements... I've heard some good things about this one - but it sounds kinda strange, too. An animated documentary!
If I had a vote? Well, I haven't seen any of them yet - so I'd have to do that before I cast my ballot. But I'll say 'The Class'.
Best Documentary
I think I've said it before, but I believe 2008 was (and might be remembered as) the year of great Documentary films. I think 'Man on Wire' and 'Trouble the Water' are the favorites here and I'll say 'Man on Wire' is going to pull out the victory.
If I had a vote? 'Man On Wire' - and I'll get to that later...
Animated Feature
'Wall-E' will win. One of this year's biggest snubs is that this wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Oh, well.
If I had a vote? Wall-E
Cinematography
Being a photographer, I wish I knew more about Cinematography and how to appreciate it. I've seen four of the five films in this category. 'Changeling' was interesting because I would say that the cinematography and the Art Direction (which it's also nominated for) held me back from getting into this film. It was just weird - weird washed out colors. Sometimes it was almost black and white but then there were really bold, bright red lips on Angelina Jolie. Yes, kinda like bad wedding photography! 'The Dark Knight'. Good, I guess, but I don't really recall the cinematography - and maybe that's it's downfall for me, here. 'Slumdog Millionaire'. I've heard that one of the great achievements of this film was that it was actually shot on the streets of Mombai. Gotta give the cinematographers and the entire crew some props for doing that! But I think this award will go to 'Benjamin Button'.
If I had a vote? 'Benjamin Button'. I loved the gold tones and the flare and the entire 'look' of this movie.
Best Supporting Actor
My biggest question is 'Did they really need to nominate the four other guys?' I'm sure they appreciate it - I guess - but I would bet serious cash that not one of them bothered preparing a speech! This could be one of the most powerful moments of the show and probably the most watched. You don't really need me to tell you who I think will win, do you?
If I had a vote? Yeah, I'd vote for him too.
Best Supporting Actress
I think Penelope Cruz will win but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Marisa Tomei take it home. She did a great job dancing with a pole and Penelope Cruz had a great kissing scene with Scarlett Johansson. Gimme a break. These are some of the best female performances of the year!?
If I had a vote? Taraji P. Henson I guess, even though Tilda Swinton gave my favorite performance in that film (she won last year for 'Michael Clayton'). But really - WHY wasn't Rosemarie DeWitt nominated? It's a crime...
Best Actor
Sean Penn is my favorite actor and I think he'll win here. I haven't seen the film but I've heard that it is some of his best work. However, I do think that this could be the closest race of the night. Mickey Rourke could just as easily take it home. Let's see - Sean Penn might not show up for the show and Mickey Rourke might just embarrass himself and everyone else. Advantage Penn... I guess.
If I had a vote? I would have to go out and see Sean Penn first, but I would give my vote to Richard Jenkins for one of the best performances I've seen in a long time and one of my favorite films of the year.
Best Actress
I think Winslet will win - though Meryl Streep could. Kate Winslet and Meryl Streept are two of the Best Actresses we have. Streep has won before - 26 years ago... Winslet has never won. This year, the academy will make up for that fact.
If I had a vote? Anne Hathaway.
Best Picture
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Would any of these films have been nominated last year? Nope. I don't think so. But still, we have to have a winner - and this year it will be...

'Slumdog Millionaire' is one of my favorites of the year - and I'm not alone. It's a really good film (though I wouldn't call it 'great'). The only other film with any chance of winning is 'Milk' - but it won't. Put your money on Slumdog - it's destiny I guess.
MOVIE CITY NEWS
If you really want to know what the best of the best are - Movie City News collects the top 10 lists of critics from all over the country. This year they collected 286 top tens. Each first place vote gets 10 points, 2nd gets 9... 10th place gets one point. And then they add it up. I really love them for doing this. So, here it is, the Politic-free and Marketing-free TRUE Best Picture rankings of 2008 (or at least as accurate a list as you're likely to find).

Finally - my favorites. Just to give you some idea of where I'm coming from, here are my favorite films from the last few years:
2004
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Born Into Brothels
2005
Junebug
2006
United 93
Pan's Labyrinth
2007
Once
The Lives of Others
So this year, if Movie City News wanted to hear my two cents, here it is...
Jared's Favorite Films of 2008
10. The Class - Synechdoche, New York - Trouble the Water - Hunger (I haven't seen any of them, but I will, and maybe they'll end up here...)
9. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - (aka, Forrest Gump '08 minus the heart. But it was still pretty good.)
8. The Dark Knight - End this one with Batman atop the rubble and the Joker with his head out the car window and it's #1, easy!
7. Let The Right One In - Teens and Vampires? No Bella and Edward here... One of the best and craziest endings of the year.
6. Shotgun Stories - Probably the most emotionally involved I became with any film this year. In a bad way?
5. The Visitor - Richard Jenkins character here just spoke to me. That's the best way I can put it.
4. Slumdog Millionaire - Fun. Powerful. Romantic. Ambitious. If Regis Philbin didn't keep popping into my mind it would be #1.
3. Rachel Getting Married
There is one word, two-syllables, near the end of this film, that shredded my heart to the core. Spoken through a window and going unheard. For me, it was the best .8 seconds of cinema I saw all year.
2. Wall-E
Silence.
Art. Romance. Morality. Adventure. No, this wasn't just a kids movie. This one is a classic.
And when was the last time you saw a great sci-fi film? ('Gattaca' was 1997 by the way...)
1. Man On Wire
The only 100% perfect film I saw this year - AND, it is highly enjoyable, suspenseful, and breathtaking. Not one mention of 9/11, can you believe it? And that's a good thing.
PLEASE TELL US YOUR FAVORITE(S) OF 2008. I'D LOVE TO HEAR IT!

Valentine Card Exchange
S
ometimes it could be considered a bad thing to 'share the love' between complete strangers - but April of April Foster Events in Indianapolis came up with a creative way that artsy-craftsy types from all over the country could send some love each others way this Valentine's Day and have it be a wonderful thing. And yours truly, being super artsy (although not so 'craftsy'), was able to participate.
Here were the simple rules:
You send your address to April.
She will send you the adresses of 5 strangers and send your address out to 5 other strangers.
You send Valentine Cards to the 5 addresses you receive.
You receive 5 unique Valentine Cards from 5 random strangers.
It sure sounded like fun to me - so I signed up. But then came the hard part - designing and creating my Valentine Cards! Well one day the Wilson family hopped in the car and headed over to our local Arts and Crafts supply store to see what we might find. After perusing their shelves we gathered up a few items and went home to begin the task of carrying out our vision. It started with carving the words 'Happy Valentine's Day' into the front of the cards with an Exacto knife. This part was Daddy's job...

[ 0 ]
Daddy then surrounded each letter with some red glitter glue and Mommy glued on some pretty ribbons and plastic hearts.

[ 0 ]
Part of the vision was to have it be a family project and so Rose and Philip were given the task of completely covering the inside of the cards with Valentine stickers.

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
And here was our final product (although this particular card didn't receive any glitter glue as we were quickly approaching our deadline to send them out and couldn't afford to wait for the glue to dry). Kinda cute - but honestly we were nervous that the cards we would soon receive would put ours to shame...

[ 0 ]
And here are some of the lovely cards we received this Valentine's Day from random strangers across the US.
First, this 'cheesy' card from Rebecca who has a site called I Wanna Be A Domestic Goddess. Very cute.

The front says 'brie mine' and the inside says 'sending the cheesiest valentine's day greetings to you!!!' :)
Next up is this homemade Valentine.

The paper is really neat - great texture - and the inside was handwritten with numerous colored pencils. I wish I could tell you who sent it, but unfortunately a few of the envelopes got thrown out before I got around to posting this!

[ 0 ]
I think this one was sent by 'Dana In Boulder' who has a blog called 'New Leaf Design' - check it out! Hers definitely had the best envelope of the bunch, though - HA! - I can't show it to you... The quote on Dana's card is by Anaîs Nin: "And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom". How's that for some Valentine's inspiration!
And finally...
And finally...

[ 0 ]
Jess, who has a site called 'Keep It Together' sent this lovely heart creation. All 6 hearts were 'stitched' on to this card. Let's see... 6x5=30. Wow! Jess really got crafty on us! Inside her card was a quote: "Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end" - Author Unknown.
Card #5 was a no show. I'm praying that it simply got lost in the mail and somehow found its way to your box. :)

Katrina and Jesse - The Engagement
I
met Katrina and Jesse down in Denver this past Sunday afternoon for an incredible engagement session. I don't quite know how it happens, but I always seem to work with some of the best people on the planet. Katrina and Jesse are fun loving people - so that's great. Friendly! Even better. But what took it over the top I think was Katrina's passion for great photography. She's an enthusiast herself and I always find that people who love photography in general, I mean really love it, always show up with a passion and commitment to getting great photos - and then great photos always happen.
First, we got some really fun photos of Katrina and Jesse and their two 'babies'!

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
Then we ventured off just the three of us. I love the intimacy of this moment...

[ 0 ]
Uh, oh. What happened!? :)

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
Katrina wanted to make sure we got some 'Jared Flare' shots. Well, I can't say that I own the copyright on flare - but I was happy to oblige! I love it when the sun streaks across a photograph...

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
And all I can tell you about this one is that I was totally shooting blind. I could barely see Katrina and Jesse and I couldn't see my camera readings at all. I really had no idea how to expose this one except to keep moving the dials around and keep on shooting. Cameras don't like it when you point them straight at the sun - but Wow! How much do I love this photo!?

[ 0 ]
And then it was over to a new local I'd never seen before that spoke to me of new possibilities. Katrina and Jesse totally made it work.

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
And this bridge, right over I-25, was freaky! It bounced whenever trucks went roaring by, underneath. Noisy, and busy, and wonderful.

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
Katrina had another request. The prior photos might have had some 'Jared Flare' but this here photo has 'Katrina and Jesse Hands'. hehe.

[ 0 ]
I was thinking of doing some photos in this tunnel (or, was it an underground parking area?). It seemed kinda creepy so I went in to check it out, took a few steps, turned around - and saw this!

[ 0 ]
Thank you so much Katrina and Jesse for your kindness and enthusiasm AND for being good sports as I tried to spy some fresh, new, creative possibilities on the fly.
I'm looking forward to the wedding!

Wedding at Westin Beaver Creek and Beaver Creek Chapel - Alicia and Hilario
I
had the wonderful privilege this last weekend to photograph the wedding of Alicia and Hilario. Their ceremony took place at the Beaver Creek Chapel and their reception was held at the all new Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Avon, Colorado.
[ 0 ]
Alicia looked wonderful in her classic champagne-colored wedding gown.

[ 0 ]
Just before leaving for the ceremony - time to retie those shoes...

[ 0 ]
And just before walking down the aisle - time to retie those rings on the pillow! (This image was taken by the talented Ryan Gauper who flew in from Michigan to second shoot with me!)

[ 0 ]
And here they come!

[ 0 ]
Alicia threw off the jacket for a few moments - braving the cold...

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
And then it was back inside where Alicia and Hilario started warming things up on the dance floor.

[ 0 ]
Everyone wanted a piece of the action!

[ 0 ]

[ 1 ]
The event was pulled off without a hitch by the AMAZING wedding planner - Stacy Pisani of Alexan Events. Seriously, if you want your wedding and reception to look fabulous - you need to give Stacy a call!

[ 0 ]
Another sweet thing that Stacy put together was this cozy lounge area. Who wants to sit in those wooden chairs all night around the dinner table? Grab a glass and kick back!

[ 0 ]

[ 0 ]
Topping off the evening was, by my count, the fourth musical act of the day. MARIACHI!

Congratulations Alicia and Hilario - have a wonderful few weeks cruising around Asia! Here's the photo with the Red Barn I know you were dying to see... ;)

Thursday's Two-Cent Reviews
W
ell, somewhat of a slow week here for my weekly two-cent reviews - but I did get a few things in here in this last week that I thought I'd share. First up, we watched Woody Allen's latest - Vicki Christina Barcelona.
[ 0 ]
This film won the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) and Penelope Cruz's performance has received quite the buzz, so much so that it won't really be a surprise if she wins the oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Now - my two cents. I gave it 2 stars on Netflix which equals "didn't like it". The only Woody Allen film I've ever liked is 'Match Point' - and it's not a comedy. And it's not so much that I don't like them - I don't get them. Every Woody Allen film I watch I seem to always end up scratching my head and saying 'Huh?!" This one is no different. Cruz has a couple funny scenes I guess - but I think Rosemarie DeWitt should be taking the oscar home. Oh, wait, she wasn't nominated...
We also watched Fireproof this week.
We also watched Fireproof this week.

[ 0 ]
I wish I could be more positive in these little mini reviews I do on Thursdays - I'm a positive person, really, I am! So, about Fireproof, I'll say this - the message is great and it did actually have me a little misty eyed near the end. So, there, some positive words - and I think I'll stop right there. :)
And finally, I finished reading 'Mistborn'.
And finally, I finished reading 'Mistborn'.

[ 0 ]
Two weeks ago I mentioned that after I finished 'The Shack' it was either going to be this one or 'Agincourt'. I actually went to the book store and read the first chapter of each and decided to go with 'Mistborn'. I liked it - quite a bit! If you're into fantasy type books like Lord of the Rings or the Wheel of Time series - then this one is one I'd recommend to you. I don't read tons of fantasy, but it's a nice world to escape to from time to time. Next up is 'Buy-ology'. Anyone read it?
And last night's 'Lost' episode...
And last night's 'Lost' episode...

[ 0 ]
This one left me feeling hopeful that we're moving forward and things will start making sense here again - unlike last weeks that seemed to throw a bunch of monkey wrenches into the works. I got excited when Ben said to Jack 'We need to hurry'. I thought to myself 'Oh, good. Maybe next week or the week after, they'll return to the island and things will progress and we won't be stuck just trying to get back all season'. We'll see. I love how Kate cares so much for Aaron. And I'm really thinking that Sun has turned bad or something. I just don't trust her any more.
And finally, I'll sign off on this Thursday's weekly post with this YouTube video. I saw it this week and it touched me deeper than anything else I saw or read. Warning: At about the 1:10 mark it hits pretty hard...

When Emily and I began our adoption journey over two years ago and we looked into adopting a child from Africa we discovered that just a few countries had adoption programs in place with the United States. Uganda was, and is, one of those countries. Just thought you all should know.
