Shauna and Aaron - The Engagement

I
t was a real treat discovering that while I was out in California I would be able to spend the evening with Shauna and Aaron for some engagement photos. I always love the thrill of new places - especially when they don't look like Colorado! And I love spending time with couples before their wedding day. I just think it makes photos on the wedding day that much better for having 'done it before' together.

We started things off at Kate Sessions Park, one of their favorite little parks. My good friend Jolynne was able to join us and she got this great photo...

Shauna and Aaron are some of the liveliest and funniest people you will ever meet and I'm sure they've constantly surprised their friends and family with their hilarity with such regularity that perhaps it's not such a surprise anymore. You can just expect that Shauna and Aaron will put a smile on people's faces wherever they go. They're also big 'Seinfeld' fans and so, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I witnessed this...

Eventually we made our way down to the beach in La Jolla. Yeah, don't get to do much of this in Colorado!

Thanks Shauna and Aaron for meeting up with us out there in your little neck of the woods! It was a blast and I'll never forget shooting photos of you two at sunset with the waves crashing on the rocks and spilling over my feet. What a great time!

Jessica and Jeremy - The Engagement

J
essica and Jeremy's wedding is coming up soon and it's hard to wait - especially after spending an evening with them taking photos. They are such a fun and beautiful couple and I know their wedding is going to be fantastic!
Before their engagement session, Jessica and I were going back and forth for awhile, tossing out ideas, trying to figure out a way to do an engagement session that wasn't 'Olan Mills' style. (Jessica, are you sure you've visited my website!?) Nothing really seemed to 'stick' until she had this idea to ride the lightrail. None of us had done it before - and I love doing something new and fresh - and so lightrail it was!

It was kinda full when we started - with people going home from work I suppose - but we rode it down to where it stopped at Union Station and got out for some great photos downtown.

We walked all over and at one point it began to rain. Jessica made very good use of Jeremy's extra shirt - and I know she's gonna dig this photo! :)
(But, really, I do LOVE this moment)

Jessica said something about them not being models and how when she looked at my previous engagement sessions she just didn't think she'd be able to create those intimate looking photos. But if the next two images tell the tale - Jessica and Jeremy, you look great and yes, you did!

(I kinda got this idea from John Michael Cooper. That is, lighting one person with a video light, and not the other. There's one of Jeremy too, but you'll have to watch the slideshow.)

And then it was time to head home - back on the lightrail.

See the guy in red just over Jeremy's shoulder? After a few minutes of snapping photos this direction he stood up, turned around, and then sat back down with his back to the camera. Sorry, dude! You've still been blogged! :)

Jessica and Jeremy are getting a Guest Book album as part of their package. There's plenty of open space inside for all of their guests to sign their names and well wishes. If you want to see it, just click the slideshow to view it. I thought about putting some 'Train' as the background music - but I'm just not into Train I guess. The song is by my friend Tyrone Wells. First line is kinda weird I know, but it will make sense... :)
Congrats guys - and really - can't wait until August!

Marissa and Jeff - The Engagement

I
joined Marissa and Jeff in Chautauqua Park the night before my plane took off for California. It was a beautiful evening and reminded me of why I love Colorado and why I love doing what I do.

I'd heard that if you keep on driving past Chautauqua you get to Flagstaff. I'd never been up there and I suggested we give it a try. They were up for it and we had a fun time going up the windy road and getting to know one another a bit more while Jeff kept us from going off the cliffs. I'm glad we made it up there - Stunning Vistas!

My vendor for canvas wall prints can do 56"x120" size prints. Now wouldn't that be cool!

Thanks for the fun evening you two. I'm looking forward to some more time in the mountains with you very soon!

Wedding at Buffalo Run - Julie and Brett

This one's been slightly delayed due to my recent travels - but alas, here are some photos from Julie and Brett's beautiful wedding on...

Would you believe I had more inquiries for this date than I did 7.7.7!? Like, WAY more. But Julie and Brett found me first, and I'm glad they did. Things started off at their place as the ladies were getting ready. Julie was enjoying some last minute help from her bridesmaids as they got the table markers and party favors ready. Isn't she so sweet to think of me!

Note to brides: Schedule some time to Laugh! I know you've got the big jumbo planner and the massively detailed schedule - and really, couldn't you free up 5 minutes in the schedule to spend some time laughing? Like, right before the ceremony or right before they cinch up that dress and you can't breathe anymore for the rest of the day...
Julie had no problems laughing - that's where I came up with this great idea! :)

Well, I suppose I should wrap this up - but I've got to tell you about the Father and Daughter dance. (I know, I know, I'm always talking about this part of the day. I'm a total wimp when it comes to Father/Daughter dances!) Anyway, Julie and her father began dancing to "Stealing Cinderella" by Chuck Wicks. And then somewhere about the first chorus, Brett got the mic from the DJ and sang the rest of the song while they finished their dance.

Never heard the song? Here are the lyrics:

I came to see her daddy for sit down man to man
It wasn't any secret i'd be asking for her hand
I guess that's why he left me waiting in the living room by myself
with at least a dozen pictures of her sitting on a shelf

[Chorus;]
She was playing Cinderella
She was riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight
Running through the sprinkler with a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad, looking up at him
In her eyes i'm Prince Charming
But to him i'm just some fella
riding in and stealing Cinderella

I leaned in towards those pictures to get a better look at one
When I heard a voice behind me say "Now, ain't she something, son?"
I said "Yes, she quite a woman" and he just stared at me
Then I realized that in his eyes she would always be

Playing Cinderella
Riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight
Running through the sprinkler with a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad, looking up at him
In her eyes i'm Prince Charming
But to him i'm just some fella riding in and stealing Cinderella

He slapped me on the shoulder
Then he called her in the room
When she threw her arms around him
That's when I could see it too

She was Playing Cinderella
Riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight
Running through the sprinkler with a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad, looking up at him
If he gives me a hard time I can't blame the fella
I'm the one who's stealing Cinderella

I'm Back!

I
'm back - actually I returned Thursday at Midnight so I could get my bearings and then shoot Jill and Josh's awesome wedding this past Saturday.
Wedding season is in full force, and I've got lots to do on this here computer - so I'll spare you all the rambling on about how great it was to get away for 10 days with my wife and kids, spend some time with Grammy and Gramps, visit with some of our best friends in the world Joey and Jolynne and all their children, AND shoot an engagement session in La Jolla, CA the very day that Tiger won the US open there.

Instead of telling you every little detail, how about just a shotgun blast of photos from my/our time in California.
(And thanks for checking back - or staying subscribed - after nearly two weeks away! I've been itchin' to blog worse than you've been itchin' to see something new I'm sure!)

And now I do need to stop and tell you about a little horse ranch we visited. This woman is a friend of my mother-in-law and she runs a therapeutic horse ranch for kids and adults. Really, her work is truly remarkable. And she has the most amazing stories - I could just sit by a campfire, roast some marshmallows, and listen to her tell story after story...

The horse my kids rode is named Bjorg(ven). Bjorg LOVES fruitty pebbles. So we stopped by a second time, filled up the pail with some of his favorite treats, and let him eat 'em all up.

And here is one of her stories I'd like to pass on as best I can:
One day she returned home to find this horse just standing in the arena. It was a complete mystery. The horse wasn't hers, she'd never seen it before, and she had no idea where it came from or how it got into her arena.
bigbob
[ 0 ]

After about two weeks she had the vet out to give it a look over. He immediately said 'Well, it's a thoroughbred. And we can tell if he's been raced if we lift his upper lip. If there's a tattoo on his gums, he's been raced.' Sure enough - there was a tattoo. By the markings they were able to track down the owners. Here's what the owners told them: "That horse broke a leg bone while jumping and we were having it shipped to a local tiger preserve to feed him to the tigers. How did he end up at your place?"
Apparently, the person driving the horse to the tigers just couldn't follow through on the job, pulled into her little ranch, ditched the horse, and took off...

And now 'Big Bob' is a member of the ranch, taking care of children and adults, and avoiding any run-ins with tigers.

Ok, enough already. :) It's time to get back to work and soon be able to show you some Wedding/Engagement/Senior photos!!

We're off to visit Grammy and Gramps in California for a bit. I'm sure I'll find ways to still work, as I've got tons to do - but finding time to give this blog and my loyal readers some love might not come so easy.
I've got so much to share with you though, even this blog might get some updates while I'm on 'vacation'!

I just really really want to show you:

Emily and Jason were married on Sunday in Crested Butte. I've drove up there (about 4 1/2 hours +) early Sunday morning and remember passing this field on the way up. Passing it again this morning (Monday) on the way home I noticed something may have gone wrong...

I was so struck by this sight that I did a U-turn on the highway and went back to try and capture it. I could be just totally ignorant to the ways of the farmer, but to me it looks like Mr. Brown left his sprinkler on overnight and it got a little chilly in the garden. :)
